What does a treatment/consultation look like?
Once you arrive, you will be escorted into the clinic room and offered some tea.
During the initial consultation a full health history will be taken. The acupuncturist will check your pulse, look at your tongue and conduct the appropriate physical exams. After a diagnosis is made according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, you will then receive an acupuncture treatment.
For your acupuncture treatment, fine sterile disposable needles will be inserted at acupuncture points throughout the body.
The insertion of needles can take between 5-10 minutes and the needles are retained for 25-30 minutes.
With your first session the practitioner will stay in the room to check in on you and update you on your progression through the session.

Eat something light prior to your treatment. If you have not eaten prior to your treatment, you may experience some light-headedness after the treatment. What does acupuncture feel like/does it hurt?
Once needles are inserted into the body, you may feel a radiating sensation when the needle is inserted, and it generally lasts for a few moments. During the remainder of the treatment a dull heavy sensation may be felt as well. Sometimes the needles are heated with moxa or an electro acupuncture device is attached after insertion.
Acupuncture needles are as thin as your hair follicle, when compared to the injection of hypodermic needle by your GP.
You may experience a sensation with acupuncture that has been described as numb, tingling, heavy, itchy, referring or just plain “weird”. This sensation is the feeling of the needle tapping into the qi to work with the body to bring back balance. This feeling is actually encouraged. It is this sensation that initiates the healing process. If you experience any pain or a feeling of intolerable discomfort, tell your practitioner.
You may feel slightly uncomfortable with the initial insertion and unfamiliarity of the sensation, however this feeling dissipates immediately, and a feeling of overall relaxation sets in.
It is still important to note that everyone has a unique pain tolerance and it may vary in different individuals.
Is acupuncture safe for pregnancy?
Absolutely. Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for pre & post-natal care.
Can i have acupuncture for IVF/Fertility treatments?
Yes. Acupuncture can be used as an adjunct to IVF or fertility treatment. In most cases there is no reasons for contraindication, the exception may be the use of herbs as some fertility specialist may advise against using something additional with their pharmaceutical protocols. We advise checking with your fertility specialists if you have this may be right for you.
How many sessions until it is effective?
Each body and condition is unique, you may feel the effectiveness in one to several sessions. We will assess your progress after every session and advise you accordingly. The analgesic effect of acupuncture generally lasts for 3-4 days before it wears off. The more frequently you attend for your condition, the faster it will be resolved.
How often should i go?
Treatments are usually scheduled on a weekly basis in many cases. In acute conditions, more frequent treatments are sometimes recommended as they are generally indicated. Most chronic conditions often require a series of treatments to fully address them. Your practitioner will discuss a treatment plan during your treatment session.
Any side effects?
Acupuncture is a relatively safe and effective health service. You may feel slight drowsiness after your treatment and some in some cases minor bruising where the needles were placed.
With long-term pain, you may feel sore the same day, however this will dissipate the next day.
